The Territory

Verucchio rises in the lower part of the Marecchia Valley, on the border of the historical region of Montefeltro and the oldest Republic of the world, San Marino; its formation, together with Monte Titano, Montebello, San Leo, Monte Montone, the Sasso of Simone and Simoncello, derives from the Apennine orogenesis, definitely settled in the Pliocene Superior (almost 3 million years ago).

The highest point of the village is 330 metres above sea level, in correspondence of an imposing rock with walls leaning against the soil, on which rises one of the eldest castle of the village looking down to the coast of Rimini. The rocky plate, of calcareous - arenaceous formation, is the result of a restless evolution that has shaped the landscape of the Valley of the River Marecchia; it is known to geologists as "Coltre" or " Colata" of the Marecchia Valley and it has created a ground full of clay. The prevalent morphology is the outcome of the selective erosion made by exogenous agents; so there are moderate and roundly clayish relieves, strongly subject to landslides and gullies. From this sandy landscape sharply erratic blocks rise, they are hard rocks forming isolated relieves; they are characterized by sub vertical walls in contrast with the sweet morphology of the near hills.

The territory has been deeply signed by the presence of the River Marecchia, that was a very "little sea" much time ago, on its rivers there were many mills, even rice was grown and fishing areas were delimited to sell to the highest bidder. Three springs of the River Marecchia gush out near Maggio Street (Maggiore), that connects the region Romagna to the Tiberina Valley; the landscape still preserves the traces left by peoples who made it the main protagonist not only of the Italian history.

Walking through the narrow and typical medieval hamlets, in the ancient centre of Verucchio, you can see some building restorations that in the course of time have modified the medieval order of the town-planning, especially in the 19 th century: the main square has been widened as we see it today, gentlemanly palaces of the noble and distinguished families that lived here were built, (sometimes they were second homes); the most important churches were restored especially in their interior.

In the 20 th century it was restored just what had been destroyed by the first and the second word war; in that dark period the old castle was used as hospital and the eighteenth-century wooden theatre, which occupied the great hall of the Palatium, inside the Rocca del Sasso, was dismantled and all its pieces were wood to burn.

In the latest years other conservative restorations have been made: it was reconstructed a part of the ancient medieval walls and thank to the designs and the original pieces left "in loco" even one of the four gates that closed the walls of the ancient castrum, the gates (or arch) of the Passerello, a district situated in the high part of the village whose name derives from a noble family that lived there in distant ages, before it moved to Rimini. Another gates is still undamaged, that of Sant'Agostino, in the same alley.
But we invite you for a walk in our history.
